For many an international traveler, private onsens in Japan are an absolute lifesaver. Known in Japanese as kashikiri onsen, private onsens allow you more flexibility to enjoy hot spring water in your own style at your own pace.

Generally speaking, you can find two types of Private Onsen.
1) The “Rental Onsen”, which is a public facility that you book by the hour. Often highly in-demand.
2) The “Ensuite Onsen” or “In-Room Onsen” – where your room at the ryokan comes with your very own luxurious hot spring bath.
